My End-of-School Reset Routine (So Summer Doesn’t Feel Chaotic)
Every year, when school ends, I feel two things at the same time: relief and overwhelm.
Relief that we made it through another school year. Overwhelm at the sudden change in routine, the mess that’s accumulated, and the fact that the kids are home all day.
That’s why I do a simple end-of-school reset. It helps me transition from school-year chaos into a calmer summer.
Here’s what that reset looks like.
Step 1: Clear the School Year Clutter
This is the first thing I do.
I go through:
- Backpacks
- Lunch boxes
- School papers
- Random art projects
- Shoes and jackets
Most of it goes straight into the trash or recycling. I only keep what truly matters. If your kids are hoarders like mine, or you just have trouble letting go of their art (also like me), you can snap photos of their work and compile them into a photo book.
This routine gives you an instant “fresh-start” feeling.
Step 2: Create a Summer Drop Zone
School bags go away and summer gear takes over.
I set up a couple spots in the hall closet and entryway for:
- Sunscreen/bug spray
- Pool bags
- Towels
- Water bottles
- Hats
This stops everything from landing all over the house. Our house is fairly small so I have to split it up, but ideally I have it all near the exits so we can grab & go.
Step 3: Light House Reset
Not a full deep clean. Just the basics:
- Clean out the fridge
- Reset main living areas
- Clear surfaces
- Refresh bedding if needed
It helps me emotionally feel in-control and ready to go.
Step 4: Mental Reset
I ask myself:
- What worked this school year?
- What didn’t?
- What do I want summer to feel like?
This helps me avoid repeating patterns that don’t serve us.
Step 5: Set a Loose Summer Intention
I don’t make big goals. I just pick a few intentions like:
- More outside time
- Less rushing/more presence
- More crafts or reading
Why This Helps
This reset:
- Reduces overwhelm
- Helps summer start intentionally
- Makes the house feel lighter
- Gives me a sense of control
This is never about being perfect, it’s just about starting summer feeling a little more prepared and less out-of-control. Maybe there’s a little less yelling.
